This course provides a comprehensive exploration of meteorology in the context of round-the-world sailing regattas. It begins with foundational knowledge of maritime meteorology, covering the factors that drive weather patterns and the specific needs of ocean sailors. The curriculum then progresses to more advanced topics, including meteorological predictions, numerical weather models, and their interpretation. A significant portion of the course focuses on practical applications, teaching students how sailors use meteorological data to make strategic decisions during races. This includes the use of routing software, on-board weather stations, and satellite communications. The course also covers the climatology of different ocean regions encountered in a round-the-world race, providing specific strategies for each area. Safety considerations, such as dealing with extreme weather and ice detection in the Southern Ocean, are thoroughly addressed. Throughout the course, real-world examples and case studies from actual races are used to illustrate concepts, giving students a practical understanding of how meteorology impacts sailing strategies and race outcomes.
