Understanding the Brain: The Neurobiology of Everyday Life

Explore how the nervous system produces behavior, influences daily life, and relates to common neurological problems.

Explore how the nervous system produces behavior, influences daily life, and relates to common neurological problems.

This course explores how the nervous system produces behavior, how we use our brain every day, and how neuroscience can explain common problems afflicting people today. It covers functional human neuroanatomy and neuronal communication, and applies this knowledge to understand perception, movement, and neurological disorders. The course progresses from basic neural function to complex cognitive processes like language and memory, providing a comprehensive overview of neurobiology in everyday life.

Expert in Neurobiology and Empathy Research

Peggy Mason, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Chicago, where she has been a faculty member since 1992. She earned both her BA in Biology and her PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard University. Professor Mason has extensive teaching experience with undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, earning numerous awards for her contributions to education. Drawing on nearly 15 years of teaching medical students, she authored the textbook Medical Neurobiology (Oxford University Press, 2011), which is tailored specifically for medical students and covers the fundamentals of the nervous system in relation to human health. Her research investigates the neurobiological underpinnings of empathy and helping behaviors.
