A Visionary Leader in Hydrology and Water Resource Management

Prof. Dr. Markus Disse has established himself as a leading authority in hydrology and water resource management at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where he has served as the Head of the Chair of Hydrology and River Basin Management since 2013. His academic journey began at the University of Karlsruhe, where he earned his Diploma in Civil Engineering and completed his PhD in 1995, focusing on groundwater recharge and regional evapotranspiration. His professional path includes significant roles at the Federal Institute of Hydrology in Koblenz, where he led departments in River Morphology and Water Management from 1996 to 2002. Before joining TUM, he headed the chair of Water Management and Resources Engineering at the University of the German Federal Armed Forces in Munich from 2003 to 2013, including a sabbatical at the University of Arizona in 2011. His research expertise encompasses process-based hydrological modeling of river basins, flood risk management, and sustainable water resources management, making him a pivotal figure in advancing hydrological science and water resource solutions.

A Visionary in Hydrology and Digital Education

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heribert Nacken, born on January 14, 1961, in Heinsberg, Germany, has established himself as a distinguished leader at RWTH Aachen University, where he serves as Professor of Engineering Hydrology since 2001 and holds the prestigious UNESCO Chair in Hydrological Change and Water Resources Management since 2010. After completing his Civil Engineering studies at RWTH Aachen in 1986 with specializations in hydraulic engineering and water-energy management, he earned his PhD in Hydrological Modelling in 1990. His career encompasses significant contributions to water resources management, including membership in UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme since 2002 and leadership of various water management initiatives. As the Rector's Delegate for Blended Learning and Exploratory Teaching Space since 2012, he has pioneered innovative educational approaches, including avatar-based teaching and virtual reality representations for international university marketing. His research focuses on engineering hydrology, sustainable water management, and the integration of digital technologies in education, making him a pivotal figure in both hydrological sciences and educational innovation. His vision extends to developing cutting-edge solutions for water resource challenges while transforming traditional teaching methods through digital innovation.
