His academic journey began at the University of Karlsruhe, where he earned his Diploma in Civil Engineering and completed his PhD in 1995, focusing on groundwater recharge and regional evapotranspiration. His professional path includes significant roles at the Federal Institute of Hydrology in Koblenz, where he led departments in River Morphology and Water Management from 1996 to 2002. Before joining TUM, he headed the chair of Water Management and Resources Engineering at the University of the German Federal Armed Forces in Munich from 2003 to 2013, including a sabbatical at the University of Arizona in 2011. His research expertise encompasses process-based hydrological modeling of river basins, flood risk management, and sustainable water resources management, making him a pivotal figure in advancing hydrological science and water resource solutions.
