A Pioneering Leader in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health

Stanford UniversityYvonne "Bonnie" Maldonado serves as Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity at Stanford School of Medicine, where she has revolutionized pediatric infectious disease research and education since 1988. Born to Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles and the first in her family to attend college, she completed her medical education at Stanford and fellowship training at Johns Hopkins before joining the CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. As Chief of Stanford's Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Director of the Global Child Health Program, she has built an extraordinary career spanning clinical care, research, and public health leadership. Her research focuses on viral vaccine development, perinatal HIV prevention, and most recently, COVID-19 epidemiology, leading over ten studies during the pandemic. She founded Stanford's pediatric HIV Clinic and has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles while co-editing major textbooks in infectious diseases. Her excellence earned her election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2023 and the American Pediatric Society's John Howland Award. Currently teaching courses in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Global Child Health, she continues to advance medical science while championing diversity in academic medicine through her leadership roles at Stanford.
