Leidy Klotz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the University of Virginia School of Architecture, where he focuses on the intersection of design and behavioral science to promote sustainability. With a Ph.D. from Penn State University, Klotz has dedicated his academic career to exploring how understanding human behavior can unlock innovative solutions to complex design challenges. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and authored the influential book Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less, which discusses how subtractive thinking can lead to more effective problem-solving in various fields, including engineering and environmental design. Klotz has also played a significant role in mentoring doctoral students, with a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion; more than three-quarters of his advisees come from underrepresented groups in engineering. His research has garnered over $10 million in competitive funding, reflecting his commitment to advancing interdisciplinary approaches that integrate behavioral insights into engineering practices. In addition to his academic contributions, Klotz is an active public speaker and writer, sharing his insights through popular media outlets and engaging with decision-makers across various sectors to foster sustainable practices worldwide.
