Eliseo "Cheo" Torres, who grew up on the Texas-Mexico border, has always been captivated by the folk traditions and culture of Mexico and his Mexican American heritage. With both parents well-versed in herbal lore and healing practices, Cheo developed a deep love and respect for the ancient art of curanderismo, or Mexican folk healing. Currently, he serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of New Mexico and is a faculty member in the College of Education. Cheo frequently lectures on the history and significance of curanderismo, engaging diverse audiences, including scholars, students, medical professionals, and laypeople interested in alternative and traditional medicine. He has authored two insightful books on his experiences and research in the field: Curandero: A Life in Mexican Folk Healing and Healing with Herbs and Rituals: A Mexican Tradition, both published by the University of New Mexico Press.
