Eliseo "Cheo" Torres: Curanderismo Advocate and Educator

Eliseo "Cheo" Torres, who grew up on the Texas-Mexico border, has always been captivated by the folk traditions and culture of Mexico and his Mexican American heritage. With both parents well-versed in herbal lore and healing practices, Cheo developed a deep love and respect for the ancient art of curanderismo, or Mexican folk healing. Currently, he serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of New Mexico and is a faculty member in the College of Education. Cheo frequently lectures on the history and significance of curanderismo, engaging diverse audiences, including scholars, students, medical professionals, and laypeople interested in alternative and traditional medicine. He has authored two insightful books on his experiences and research in the field: Curandero: A Life in Mexican Folk Healing and Healing with Herbs and Rituals: A Mexican Tradition, both published by the University of New Mexico Press.

Scholar and Advocate of Traditional Medicine

Dr. Mario Del Angel hails from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in bilingual education from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. He completed his PhD in Spanish at the University of New Mexico, where he teaches various courses, including Spanish as a second language, heritage language, medical Spanish, and bilingual studies on Curanderismo—traditional medicine of Mexico and the Southwest. Del Angel holds a certificate in Mexican traditional medicine from CEDEHC, the School of Community Human Development in Cuernavaca, Morelos, and has also received certificates in Spanish-English translation and interpretation from the National Center for Interpretation at the University of Arizona. He has translated several books on traditional medicine and serves as co-director of the Curanderismo program at the University of New Mexico. His research focuses on the contributions and lives of curanderos in southern, central, and northern Mexico, with a specialization in the Fidencista healing movement, which follows the teachings of El Niño Fidencio in Nuevo León, Mexico.
