Innovator in Music Composition and Education

James Humberstone is a composer whose work is shaped by his research in experimental music and a commitment to creating engaging compositions for children and community ensembles. After moving to Australia from London in 1997, he completed a degree in composition at the University of Exeter, where he focused his honors thesis on the music of Howard Skempton, a major influence on his artistic development. Humberstone's unique approach combines his postgraduate studies in composition and experimental music with educational qualifications, honed during an 11-year residency at Sydney's MLC School. His nearly decade-long experience at Sibelius Software further enriches his expertise, making him a leading authority in integrating technology into music. After earning his PhD in 2013, he became a Lecturer in Music Education at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he continues to work across composition, music education, and technology research while exploring the realm of experimental music.
