A Pioneering Mathematics Education Reformer

Jo Boaler, born in 1964, serves as the Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford University, where she has revolutionized mathematics education through research and advocacy. After beginning her career as a mathematics teacher in London comprehensive schools, she earned her Ph.D. from King's College London, winning the British Educational Research Association's award for best Ph.D. in education in 1997. In 2013, she co-founded youcubed.org with Cathy Williams to provide innovative mathematics resources to teachers, parents, and students worldwide, reaching over half a million teachers monthly. Her influential work spans nineteen books, including "Limitless Mind," "Mathematical Mindsets," and her latest "Math-ish: Finding Creativity, Diversity and Meaning in Mathematics." Her contributions have earned numerous accolades, including the NCSM Kay Gilliland Equity Award, the CMC Walter Denham Mathematics Leadership award, and a National Science Foundation Early Career Award. Despite facing controversy over her reform mathematics approaches, Boaler continues to champion equitable mathematics education through her research at Stanford, where she leads initiatives in K-12 data science and was named one of eight educators "changing the face of education" by the BBC.
