Distinguished Development Economist and Global Policy Expert
John Page is a renowned development economist who currently serves as a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research. His academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in economics from Stanford University, followed by a doctorate from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. His extensive career spans over four decades, including 28 years at the World Bank where he held several senior positions including Director of Poverty Reduction, Director of Economic Policy, and Chief Economist for both the Middle East and North Africa region and the Africa region. His scholarly contributions include more than 100 published articles on developing economies and several influential books examining industrial development and economic transformation in Africa. He currently serves as Country Director for Tanzania at the International Growth Centre and holds academic positions as adjunct professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo and research associate at Oxford University's Center for the Study of African Economies. His recent work focuses on structural transformation in Africa, particularly examining how industries without smokestacks can address youth unemployment and drive economic growth. His expertise spans development economics, industrial policy, international trade, and poverty reduction, with particular focus on Africa, East Asia, and the Middle East.
