A Leader in Global Health and Humanitarian Efforts
Gilbert Burnham, MD, is a professor in the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the founder of the Center for Humanitarian Health. With a medical background in tropical diseases and training from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, he has dedicated his career to health programs in low- and middle-income countries. His research spans diverse regions, with recent work in Iraq, Syria, and Jordan, and since 2002, he has advised on national health programs in Afghanistan. Before joining Johns Hopkins, he spent 15 years managing health services in Malawi, including for Mozambican war refugees. A prolific scholar, he has authored over 150 papers and teaches several courses, including the widely attended HELP course.
Expert in Nutrition and Humanitarian Health
Mija-Tesse Ververs, MD, MPH, is a Senior Associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and faculty member at the Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health. She also serves as a Health Scientist/Senior Nutritionist at the Emergency Response and Recovery Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With over 30 years of experience, Mija has worked in numerous countries with more than 15 organizations, including international NGOs, IFRC, the UN, government agencies, and academic institutions. Her expertise encompasses nutrition, public health, food security, and livelihoods programming in conflict- and disaster-affected settings. A graduate of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, she previously worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.
