She serves as the Director of the Office of Public Health Practice and Training and the MSPH Program in Health Policy. Her work focuses on strengthening public health infrastructure, exploring environmental and health connections, and developing effective public health policies. Previously, she was Director of Environmental Health at the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), where she supported 3,000 local health departments through education, technical assistance, and fostering partnerships across local, state, and federal agencies to enhance environmental public health practice.

Sharfstein is the Associate Dean for Public Health Practice and Training at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he also serves as Professor of the Practice in the Department of Health Policy and Management. Dr. Sharfstein has an extensive background in public health leadership, having previously held significant roles such as Health Commissioner in Baltimore, Principal Deputy Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and Health Secretary in Maryland.
