Module Description

This course provides comprehensive professional development for postdoctoral researchers, focusing on key skills and strategies for success. It covers five main areas: exploring professional identities and roles, transitioning into the postdoc community, effective career planning, building resilience, and fostering inclusive research environments. The course uses inclusive, active-learning approaches to engage participants and encourages application of learned concepts to real-world scenarios. A unique feature is the opportunity to join Postdoc Academy Learning Sessions (PALS), allowing for deeper engagement with course material and networking with other postdocs. Developed with funding from the National Institutes of Health, this course is specifically designed to address the unique needs of postdoctoral researchers across various disciplines.

Dr. Sarah Chobot Hokanson is the Assistant Provost of Professional Development and Postdoctoral Affairs at Boston University, where she leads initiatives to support the career development of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. With a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Hokanson brings both scientific expertise and a deep understanding of academic career paths to her role. She oversees postdoctoral affairs, designs professional development programming, and contributes to policies that enhance postdoctoral scholarship across the university.

Pioneering Educator and Researcher in STEM Learning and Teaching

Bennett Goldberg is a distinguished academic leader and researcher who has made significant contributions to both physics and educational innovation in higher education. As the Director of the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching and Assistant Provost for Learning and Teaching at Northwestern University, Goldberg brings a wealth of experience in STEM education and research to his role. With a background that includes a BA from Harvard College and an MS and Ph.D. in physics from Brown University, Goldberg has had a remarkable career spanning nearly three decades at Boston University before joining Northwestern in 2016. His research interests are diverse, encompassing nano-optics, spectroscopy, and the study of 2D crystals, reflecting his commitment to cutting-edge scientific inquiry. Goldberg's dedication to improving STEM education is evident in his work on course transformation and the development of evidence-based, active learning approaches. As a Fellow of the American Physical Society and recipient of prestigious awards such as the Sloan Foundation Fellowship and the Presidential Young Investigators Award, Goldberg has been recognized for his contributions to both research and education.
