Dr. Tanjala Purnell is an Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular and Clinical Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with joint faculty appointments in the Departments of Surgery, Health Policy and Management, and Health Behavior and Society. An expert in epidemiology and health services research, she has over a decade of experience addressing health disparities related to cardiometabolic diseases, including kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Dr. Purnell's research also explores the dual impact of COVID-19 and systemic racism on healthcare disparities in the U.S. She has received multiple research honors and published in top journals such as JAMA and Health Affairs. Dedicated to education, she has mentored over 150 scholars, facilitated seminars for 7,000+ academic and community members, and developed health equity research methods courses for thousands of learners worldwide, earning multiple Teaching Excellence Awards from Johns Hopkins University.
