Pete Higgins

Professor Peter Higgins is a leading figure in Outdoor, Environmental, and Sustainability Education at the University of Edinburgh, where he serves as the Director of the UN-recognized center, Learning for Sustainability Scotland. With a background in environmental science and freshwater biology, he has dedicated his career to integrating education with sustainability practices. He chaired the Scottish Government’s Learning for Sustainability Implementation Groups from 2012 to 2016 and has been recognized for his teaching excellence with the university's highest award. Professor Higgins is also actively involved with the Field Studies Council and serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of NatureScot. His courses, including Learning for a Sustainable Future and Learning for a Sustainable Future: Live at COP28, emphasize practical approaches to sustainability education. He has authored over 170 publications and has played a pivotal role in developing online learning initiatives, such as MOOCs that reach thousands of participants globally. His work significantly influences educational policy and practice in Scotland and beyond, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainability among learners of all ages.
