Lars Tønder is a Professor with special responsibilities in the Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen, where he specializes in the intersection of climate change and democracy. His research emphasizes governance, citizen participation, civil society, and the inclusion of non-human entities in democratic processes. Previously, he focused on broader democratic theory topics such as political pluralism, social justice, tolerance, and free speech. Tønder directs two significant research projects: "Democratic Innovation in a Green Transition" and "Vital Politics: Rethinking Normativity in the Anthropocene," and he co-investigates a project titled "The Danish Model for Citizen Engagement in Renewable Energy." He serves on the advisory board of Denmark's National Climate Research Center and frequently advises local and national governments on engaging citizens as active participants in the green transition. His latest book, Power in the Anthropocene, is set to be published by Edinburgh University Press in 2025. Passionate about higher education, Professor Tønder currently holds the position of Head of Studies for both the BSc and MSc degrees in Political Science and Social Studies at the university.
