He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, and has held research positions at Hitachi Research in Tokyo, IBM Research in Zurich, and the University of Twente in the Netherlands. His expertise encompasses microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), scanning probe systems, and self-assembly techniques. Brugger's research focuses on advancing micro/nanofabrication technologies and developing innovative materials for various applications, including wearable and biomedical devices. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and supervised more than 25 Ph.D. students, contributing significantly to the field of microengineering. His work has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including being named a Fellow of the IEEE and receiving an ERC Advanced Grant for his contributions to advanced micro-manufacturing.
