Dr. John E. Thomas is a Scholar in Residence and Professor of Engineering Practice in the Lockheed Martin Engineering Management Program at the University of Colorado Boulder. With over 25 years of professional experience across various industries, including wireless communications, software, semiconductors, and defense, Dr. Thomas has a rich background in building and leading high-performing cross-functional teams and managing complex product development initiatives. His extensive leadership experience encompasses business development, operations, and global program management in both startup and growth organizations.Dr. Thomas is passionate about fostering sustainable and resilient systems for future generations. His research interests lie at the intersection of engineering and social science, focusing on human resilience and the dynamics of complex socio-technical systems that support community well-being, such as energy, water, transportation, and cybersecurity. He co-founded the Resilience Engineering Institute, dedicated to disseminating knowledge and tools related to resilience. Dr. Thomas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UC Santa Barbara, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, an MBA from Santa Clara University, and a Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering from Arizona State University. Through his courses like "Creating a Technology Startup Company" and "Resilience & Leadership," he aims to equip students with the skills necessary to navigate challenges in technology and leadership effectively.
