École Polytechnique Fédérale de LausanneJohannes Gräff: Pioneer in Neuroepigenetics and Memory ResearchJohannes Gräff is an Associate Professor of Life Sciences at EPFL's Brain Mind Institute, where he directs the Laboratory of Neuroepigenetics. Born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Lausanne, including a year at the University of British Columbia. After studying genetic causes of aging in ants for his M.Sc. with Laurent Keller, he earned his Ph.D. in 2009 from ETH Zurich under Isabelle Mansuy, focusing on neuroepigenetic mechanisms of learning and memory. His postdoctoral work at MIT with Li-Huei Tsai led to groundbreaking discoveries about epigenetic machinery's role in neurodegeneration and traumatic memories. Since joining EPFL in 2013, he has made pioneering contributions to understanding epigenetic bases of memory, particularly in Alzheimer's disease and PTSD. His achievements include winning the 2022 Robert Bing Prize, an ERC Consolidator Grant for the Epi-Mnemo project, and multiple prestigious fellowships. Currently serving as Director of the Doctoral School of Neuroscience, his research combines fundamental and translational neuroscience to explore memory formation, storage, and modification through epigenetic mechanisms
