Haohsiang Liao

Haohsiang Liao serves as Senior Lecturer and Director of the Chinese Language Program at MIT, where he combines traditional teaching methods with digital innovation. After earning his PhD from Ohio State University, MPhil from Taiwan Normal University, and BA from National Tsing Hua University, he taught at Williams College and Harvard University before joining MIT. His contributions to Chinese language education include launching MIT's first Chinese language MOOC in 2020, which attracted thousands of learners from over 130 countries. As a member of the MandarinX MOOC executive team, he has authored several Chinese language textbooks and contributed to the Encyclopedia of Chinese Language and Linguistics. His expertise spans Chinese language pedagogy, cross-cultural communication, and teacher training, while directing MIT's Chinese language curriculum and study abroad programs. Through his innovative approach to combining in-class instruction with digital learning advancements, he continues to make high-quality Chinese language education accessible to learners worldwide
