Dr. Matthew Shupe is a Senior Research Scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He serves as the scientific co-lead for the MOSAiC expedition, an extensive international initiative aimed at understanding Arctic climate dynamics. Since the late 1990s, Dr. Shupe has focused his research on Arctic cloud and atmospheric processes, investigating their interactions with surface conditions through ground- and aircraft-based observations. His fieldwork has taken him to numerous Arctic locations, including field stations, the Greenland Ice Sheet, and aboard icebreakers navigating the Arctic sea ice. Dr. Shupe holds a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Colorado Boulder, and his extensive research contributes significantly to our understanding of atmospheric moisture budgets, cloud properties, and their implications for the cryosphere and climate change.
