Dr. Duncan earned his BA from Vanderbilt University in 1968 and his MD from Duke University in 1972. He completed his surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at Duke before joining Yale's faculty and Yale-New Haven Hospital staff in 1977. Board-certified in Neurosurgery since 1979, he became Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Yale in 1978 and was appointed Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics in 1994. He established the state's only dedicated pediatric neurosurgical unit, published over 100 articles, and led research projects, including the Indomethacin Projects for preventing intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants. He directs the Neurosurgery Residency Program and prefers fly-fishing over marathons.
