Shi is a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he has served since 1994. His academic journey includes BS and MS degrees from Stanford University and a PhD from UC Berkeley in Electrical Engineering. As Special Advisor to the Vice-President for Research and Development since 2023, Shi has demonstrated exceptional leadership through various roles, including Acting Dean of Engineering and Head of the ECE Department. His research spans neuromorphic engineering, computational neuroscience, and human-machine interfaces, with particular emphasis on facial expressions and eye movement analysis. Shi's contributions earned him IEEE Fellowship in 2001, making him one of the youngest elected fellows. He currently directs the HKUST Center for Aging Science and serves as Associate Director of the HKUST-HKSI Joint Institute on Sports Science and Technology. His work bridges technology and human behavior understanding, leading to collaborations across all four schools of the university. Beyond research, Shi has held visiting positions at MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, while actively serving the IEEE community as a Distinguished Lecturer and technical committee chair.
