An accomplished author, he has written several books, such as Using Google App Engine and Python for Everybody. His research centers on developing learning management systems, having served as the chief architect for Sakai, which is utilized by approximately 300 educational institutions worldwide. In the mid-1990s, Dr. Severance hosted Internet: TCI, a national television talk show discussing internet topics.
