Head of Division of Primary Care Medicine at the University of Geneva

Professor Idris Guessous is the Head of the Division of Primary Care Medicine at the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) and has a distinguished background in medicine and epidemiology. He earned his medical degree in 2001 from the University of Lausanne, followed by clinical and epidemiological training, a doctorate in medicine, and specialization in general internal medicine. He furthered his education with a PhD in epidemiology at Emory University, where he also completed a fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. Since joining HUG in 2009 as the head of the population epidemiology unit, he has focused on studying health determinants, including genetic and environmental factors. Professor Guessous has authored over 200 scientific articles and is actively involved in various national and international population-based studies. He co-founded the GIRAPH research group, which integrates geographic information into public health research. His leadership extends to multiple projects aimed at improving public health, including being the principal investigator for a European clinical trial on post-COVID syndrome. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he serves on the executive committee of the Swiss Society of General Internal Medicine and is an academic editor for the Swiss Medical Weekly. Recently appointed as Vice-Dean for postgraduate education at UNIGE Faculty of Medicine, he is committed to advancing medical education and research in primary care.
