Distinguished Geneticist and Biology Education Innovator

Susan Gurney combines expertise in genetics, forensic science, and biology education through her diverse academic journey. After completing her undergraduate studies in cell biology and pathology at the University of St Andrews, she pursued an MSc in stem cell biology at Cambridge University, followed by an MSc in Forensic Science from Anglia Ruskin University. Her PhD research focused on evolutionary studies through mitochondrial DNA analysis. Currently serving as an Associate Teaching Professor in the Biology Department at Drexel University in Philadelphia, she specializes in bacteriophage biology and forensic applications of DNA analysis. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning, particularly through the SEA-PHAGES program, an HHMI-sponsored initiative where undergraduate students engage in authentic research experiences isolating and analyzing bacteriophage viruses. Her work spans multiple disciplines, including mitochondrial DNA analysis for forensic applications, genome annotation of bacteriophage viruses, and the development of innovative teaching methodologies in biological sciences.
