Population Health: Study Design

Master epidemiological research methods for effective health care decision-making in diverse populations.

Master epidemiological research methods for effective health care decision-making in diverse populations.

Develop crucial skills in designing and interpreting epidemiological studies for population health management. This course guides you through key steps in research study design, from formulating research questions to analyzing results. Focus on analytical studies in etiological research to investigate causal relationships between risk factors and health outcomes. Learn to calculate and interpret frequency and effect measures, recognize and address bias and confounding, and understand basic principles of causal inference. Gain practical experience with various study designs, including cohort, case-control, and randomized controlled trials. This course is ideal for health care professionals, researchers, and students looking to enhance their ability to make evidence-based decisions in increasingly complex health care environments.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to epidemiological study design and analysis for population health management. Students will learn to formulate research questions, select appropriate study designs, and interpret results with a focus on etiological research. The curriculum covers key concepts such as frequency and effect measures, bias and confounding, and causal inference. Participants will gain hands-on experience with various study types, including cohort, case-control, and randomized controlled trials. The course also addresses challenges in modern healthcare, such as aging populations, rising costs, and advancing technologies. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to design robust research studies and critically evaluate epidemiological evidence for informed decision-making in healthcare and public health settings.

Leading Expert in Clinical Epidemiology at Leiden University

Prof. Dr. Frits Rosendaal is a prominent figure in the field of clinical epidemiology, holding the position of professor and chair at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). Born in 1959, he has made significant contributions to understanding hereditary forms of thrombosis and their associated health risks, such as venous thrombosis and heart attacks. His research has identified critical genetic factors, including the 'factor V Leiden' mutation, which significantly increases thrombosis risk, especially among women using contraceptives. Renowned for his ability to collaborate effectively with both clinicians and fundamental researchers, Rosendaal has established a robust international network and is frequently invited to present at major conferences. His extensive publication record includes numerous articles in top-tier journals like Blood, The New England Journal of Medicine, and The Lancet, underscoring his status as a leading expert in his field. Additionally, he teaches an online course on Coursera titled "Population Health: Study Design," further sharing his expertise with a broader audience.
