Explore climate change impacts on indigenous communities. Learn adaptation strategies and research methodologies.
This course examines the complex relationship between climate change and Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLC). It covers the disproportionate impacts of climate change on IPLC, their unique perspectives on these changes, and their adaptive strategies. The curriculum is divided into five main sections: 1) key concepts of climate change and indigenous knowledge systems, 2) climate change impacts on IPLC at various levels, 3) coping and adaptation strategies of IPLC, 4) methodologies for researching local perceptions of climate change, and 5) the role of IPLC in global climate governance. Through a combination of theoretical and methodological components, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how climate change affects IPLC and learn techniques for conducting research on indigenous perceptions of climate change impacts.

This course, "Climate Change and Indigenous People and Local Communities," offers a comprehensive exploration of the intersections between climate change impacts and the experiences of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLC). Over six modules, students will gain insights into the unique challenges faced by IPLC due to climate change, their traditional knowledge systems, and their adaptive strategies. The course begins with an introduction to key concepts and the paradox of IPLC's minimal contribution to climate change versus their disproportionate impact. It then delves into specific climate change impacts on IPLC, covering climatic, biological, physical, and human systems. Students will learn about various coping and adaptation strategies employed by IPLC worldwide. The course also includes a methodological component, teaching standardized protocols for assessing local perceptions of climate change. Finally, it examines the role of IPLC in global climate governance, emphasizing the importance of their inclusion in policy-making processes.
