Dr. Hiroshi Nishiura was an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Medicine at The University of Tokyo, where he specialized in statistical epidemiology of infectious diseases, epidemiological modeling, and biomathematical formulations of transmission dynamics. His research aimed to address policy-relevant questions using mathematical models alongside empirical data and statistical techniques.
Leader in Global Health Policy at the University of Tokyo
Dr. Kenji Shibuya is a Professor and Chair of Global Health Policy at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Medicine and serves as President of the Japan Institute for Global Health. He earned his MD from the University of Tokyo and a doctorate in international health economics from Harvard University. After teaching at Teikyo University, he joined the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001, where he led the Health Statistics and Evidence Unit from 2005 to 2008. Dr. Shibuya has published extensively on topics including mortality, disease burden, health system performance, and health diplomacy. He played a pivotal role in shaping Japan's global health policy following the Hokkaido Toyako G8 Summit in 2008 and led the Lancet Series on Japan in 2011 to stimulate discussions on health policy reform. Currently, he advises both central and local governments, having chaired the Advisory Panel on Health Care 2035 for the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, and serves as the Executive Advisor on Global Health for the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
