Module Description

This course explores the concept of sustainable infrastructure and its critical role in achieving inclusive economic growth and meeting global sustainability commitments. The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the IDB's vision for future infrastructure, emphasizing four key dimensions of sustainability: economic and financial, environmental, social, and institutional. Participants will learn about the main challenges in developing sustainable infrastructure projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, and how these projects can contribute to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement targets. The course covers practical aspects of incorporating sustainability principles throughout the infrastructure project cycle, from preparation and design to construction and operation. It also introduces learners to various climate funds and financing mechanisms available for sustainable infrastructure projects, enabling them to align funding sources with sustainability goals.

General Business Director and member of the IDB Invest Steering Committee

Gema oversees commercial and investment strategies, developing value propositions that encompass both financial and non-financial products for clients and partners in the financial, corporate, infrastructure, and energy sectors. Leading a team of 250 across 25 countries, they invest US$9 trillion annually, utilizing both their own and third-party capital, and manage assets worth US$16 trillion. This has established IDB Invest as a leader in sustainable finance, providing innovative solutions that maximize impact and foster development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Previously, Gema headed the IDB's Financial Markets Division and played a key role in the establishment of IDB Invest. Before joining the IDB Group, she spent 15 years in commercial and investment banking in London, Madrid, and New York. Gema serves on the Board of Directors of Internet para Todos (IpT) and is a member of the World Trade Organization's Group of Experts on Foreign Trade Financing. Recognized as one of Latin America’s top fifty executives by Latin Trade magazine, she is also a member of the Young President's Organization (YPO) and a First Mover Fellow at the Aspen Institute. She holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration from the Autonomous University of Madrid, along with master's degrees in Sustainability and International Business from the University of Cambridge and the Complutense University of Madrid, respectively.

Distinguished Climate Change and Infrastructure Expert

Alfred Grünwaldt serves as Lead Climate Change Specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank, where he acts as climate focal point for the Infrastructure Department. After earning his Mechanical Engineering degree from Universidad del Norte, Master's in Computational Mechanics from Universität Stuttgart, and Master's in Environmental Management from Johns Hopkins University, he has built over 15 years of expertise in climate adaptation and infrastructure sustainability. His leadership includes chairing the MDB Working Group on Climate Change Adaptation Finance (2018-2020) and directing over 50 operations contributing to IDB Group's climate finance objectives. Through his focus on water resources and climate challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean, he has authored numerous technical publications on adaptation, climate resilience, and GHG mitigation, particularly in water, transport, and energy sectors
