Educational Technology Innovator and Physics Education Researcher

Dr. Colin Fredericks has established himself as a leading figure in educational technology and online learning innovation at HarvardX, where he serves as Senior Project Lead. After completing his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where his thesis examined student behavior patterns in online homework systems, he transitioned through teaching roles at Hyde School and Northfield Mt. Hermon before joining MIT as a postdoctoral fellow. At HarvardX, he has led the development of numerous successful MOOCs, including Super-Earths and Life, Energy Within Environmental Constraints, and The Health Effects of Climate Change. As Manager of Instructional Technology at Harvard's Office of the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning, he has made significant contributions to online education, notably developing the partial credit feature for the Open edX platform and conducting research on adaptive assessment in MOOCs. His research has demonstrated that online courses can be as effective as traditional classroom courses, regardless of students' initial preparation levels. Beyond his academic work, Fredericks designs pen-and-paper roleplaying games through Valent Games and maintains an active role in science advocacy, bringing his diverse background in community radio, tabletop RPG design, and martial arts to his educational technology work.

Digital Education Pioneer and Online Learning Strategist

Amy Woodgate has established herself as a leading figure in digital education and online learning strategy. She holds an MA in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, an MSc in Digital Education, and recently completed her MEd in Education Leadership from the University of Strathclyde. Her career began at the University of Edinburgh, where she led the strategic expansion of the university's online course portfolio and established the first non-US MOOCs. In 2016, she founded Woodgate Consulting, an education consultancy specializing in online and blended learning solutions. Her company creates courses, learning experiences, media content, and virtual learning environments designed for scale, with a team of four staff members. She previously served as Head of Digital and Learning at Arts Cabinet and Project Manager at the University of Edinburgh, where she managed a £4.5 million investment in online postgraduate degree programs. Her approach emphasizes values-driven digital learning, open practices, and creating learning solutions that people genuinely enjoy rather than merely tolerate. Beyond her consultancy work, she contributes to the broader education community through organizations like Fife Women in Business and the Federation of Small Businesses, while maintaining a strong commitment to collaborative and open educational practices.
